THEY SHALT NOT BORE US—
CHARACTERS WE HAVE SEEN TOO OFTEN
By: Alice Orr
I suspect you see what‘s lacking in these characters, and others like them. Their behavior lacks
depth. Their motivations are commonplace and shallow. We‘ve seen them before in too many stories.
Once again, feel free to add your own too-typical types to the list.
Police your own work for their possible presence. Choose to improve or eject. With some
character excavation and re-thinking, Cal could become a three-dimensional man. Unfortunately,
Lucy may be beyond reclamation. Let her rest in peace in the rejection pile. Meanwhile, make certain
your story isn‘t languishing, from boredom, beside her.
