MFRW : Why did you decide to write romance novels ?
AK : It wasn ’ t a conscious choice . I set out writing science fiction , but the story in my head had that romantic thread through it . Come to find out so did my urban fantasy . It took me a while to lean into the label , but once I did there wasn ’ t any going back . I didn ’ t even question it when I started my paranormal series , and the new thing I ’ m working on began as a meet cute . So yep , guess that ’ s what I write .

How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing ? A lot of my personality and experiences are in my writing . I think it ’ s pretty cool how people who know me will pick up one of my books and tell me they read it hearing my voice . There ’ s definitely easter eggs for them , sometimes those are on purpose and sometimes they ’ re totally accidental . One of the really important dates in my book is my best friend ’ s birthday and I didn ’ t realize it until after she ’ d pointed it out . That , and like beekeeping and not being a big fan of heights are definitely things I can relate to on a personal level .
When did you first think about writing and what prompted you to submit your first ms ? What genre is it ? I ’ ve always written but was on an extended hiatus after having kids . Then I had this super vivid dream of a woman lost in the snow . I

AK : couldn ’ t get the image out of my head and had to write her story , which became Breaker . I was laid up after surgery and wrote the first draft of the entire series in one go and then figured I better do something with it . Breaker is spicy dystopian sci-fi romance .
Do you feel humor is important in fiction and why ? Yeah , I think it ’ s really important , especially in heavy books . There needs to be some balance otherwise you get bogged down . In my opinion it ’ s that humor that keeps it realistic . There ’ s always going to be someone laughing in the face of death or making bad jokes before the bomb hits . That ’ s just human nature .
What about your family ? Do they know not to bother you when you are writing , or are there constant interruptions ? Are they , especially your significant other , supportive of your work ? Do you ever ask them for advice ? My family is awesome . They generally leave me in my cave and chuck peanuts at me every so often . Make sure I ’ m fed and watered . My husband is very supportive . I don ’ t generally ask for advice , but I will ask him about male point of view stuff . It ’ s made for some interesting conversations !
