SEELIE KAY (Cont.) INTERVIEW MFRW: SK: MFRW: SK: MFRW: SK: 5 Why did you decide to write romance novels? Because I am fascinated by the games people play to find and secure a lasting relationship, which is not always love. There’s the chase, the courtship, the falling, the surrender. That’s what I try to capture in my stories. Tell us about your latest book. What moti- vated the story? I wrote “Seizing Hope” because I have been there: Knocked down by divorce, financially and emotionally devastated, and in my case, with sole custody of a toddler. I wanted, no, I needed to, write a story about women who fought back, who overcame the obstacles placed in their way, and reclaimed not only their dignity, but their lives. What do you do to relax and recharge your batteries? I cook and bake. I love to try new recipes and experiment with new ingredients, and that somehow soothes me. Of course, I had a lot of disasters in the kitchen and my family has, on occasion, accused me of treating them as guinea pigs, but in the end, they know it’s for a good cause. MFRW: SK: MFRW: SK: A biography has been written about you. What do you think the title would be in six words or less? “She did it her way.” There was a lot of opposition to my writing romance, especially the spicy kind, but I had all of these characters and plots roaming around my head. I had to let them out. De- spite the fact that most thought I should stick to “serious journalism,” I’ve never regretted it. What is your secret guilty pleasure? The reality series, “The Bachelor/ Bachelorette.” Each season I promise myself I will avoid it, but somehow, I always get sucked in. I am fascinated by all the drama and manipulation that takes place, all suppos- edly in pursuit of love. And the mean girls, I am always rooting for them to get theirs! However, there’s a reason most of those rela- tionships don’t last and that’s because it’s not real. (Slaps head.) Duh.
