Hydrogen demand from refinery and ammonia industries has put the world at annual production
of 53 million metric tons in 2010. In 2010, estimated market size for on-purpose hydrogen
production was $82.7 billion. In next five years, during 2011 – 2016, when petroleum
consumption is expected to increase by CAGR of 1.3% while ammonia production will rise by
CAGR of 4.4%, hydrogen production is estimated to grow by CAGR of 5.6%. During the period,
main growth drivers will be introduction of regulatory norms instructing lower sulfur level in
petroleum products, decreasing crude oil quality, and search of cleaner fuel options.
Currently, merchant hydrogen production is a small segment but the will be the fastest growing
segment in the future. At present it accounts for only 12% of total on-purpose hydrogen
generation but this share is estimated to increase up to 16% by 2016.
Asia & Oceania is the largest consumer of hydrogen since the region is pioneer in refinery
capacity as well as ammonia production capacity. After refinery and ammonia production,
methanol comes third in hydrogen consumption share. The region also leads in methanol
production. Europe & Eurasia is the second largest consumer followed by North America.
