size of a computer mouse which can be directly attached to the body without any tubing. For the infusion
of insulin, a small catheter is subcutaneously inserted from the underside of the patch pump. The three
main components of an insulin patch pump are an insulin reservoir, a cannula and a pumping mechanism.
Unlike traditional pumps, these parts are contained in a single case without any tubing. The device is
directly worn on the body using an adhesive patch. The activation of the patch is programmed from a
remote device and the cannula is inserted automatically.

secretion into the bloodstream. Every few minutes, the pancreas, in response to the liver’s secretion of
glucose, secretes a small amount of insulin in the bloodstream which is known as basal insulin. Before a
person develops diabetes, pancreas regularly produce insulin proportionate to the amount of glucose
present in the bloodstream. When there is a large amount of blood glucose in the body, such as after
meals, the pancreas secret larger amounts of insulin known as bolus insulin. Using patch pumps, the rate
of insulin delivery can be adjusted in response to the liver’s pattern of glucose secretion.
