The members of the Maritzburg College Rugby Referees ’ Society enjoyed a long and successful season , in which the core of talented referees that had emerged in previous seasons continued to hone their blowing skills – with some of them presiding as either referee or touch-judge in up to three matches per day . The fact that all of the senior members of the society actually played the game too – with B-J Schroeder , C Poole and H Swift doing so at a competitive level – serves to highlight the dedication they displayed this season .
Swift led the society with enthusiasm , and he was a deserved holder of Colours & Scarf for his skill and his dedication to the society since Second Form . Schroeder again was a loyal servant of the club and was also a most worthy recipient of Colours & Scarf for his loyalty and dedication over five seasons at College . Poole was the new-comer amongst the trio of Sixth Form boys , and he made what can only be referred to as startling progress in his rookie season . In the end , he officiated in 26 matches over the course of 2016 and was deservedly awarded Colours for his tremendous efforts . Not far behind him in terms of enthusiasm was his fellow rookie , C Beckerling , who also took to the whistle with great enthusiasm this season and made considerable progress . He will play a leading role in the society next year . Another stalwart of the society was Sixth Former , G van Rensburg , who officiated in 12 matches over the course of the season and was deservedly awarded Colours for his service to College sport .
Once again , R Stander proved to be a polished whistleman , who at the Sport & Cultural Ceremony was deservedly re-awarded the Ian Rogers Trophy for the Most Competent Rugby Referee , while the Craig Joubert Trophy for the Most Improved Rugby Referee was awarded to Poole .
Other boys who officiated in matches included Sixth Former K Coetzee , A Little and his younger brother , L Little , and R van der Berg , who will , with Beckerling , form the core of blooded referees as the society moves into a rebuilding phase from next year onwards . My thanks go to the boys for their efforts , to particularly the experienced referees at the local MRSSU ( notably , Messrs K Wessels , K Marais and P van der Merwe ) for the considerable support they offered the College referees throughout the season , and to College parents Messrs R Westley , A Grant , H Stander and G Little for their continued enthusiasm and support .
Mr M Marwick
