BASKETBALL
2nd Team
The 2nd basketball team had a very good season . In the first term , they won all their games and had fun playing against the 1st teams of Weston and Treverton which they easily beat . The new assistant coach also arrived and was filled with passion and love for the sport . The players were enthusiastic and supportive of one another . Their energy during practices was also displayed during the games .
In the fourth term , only two games were lost , against Kearsney College and Michaelhouse . Having two coaches enabled us to effectively analyse the players and to come up with good combinations . We were delighted with the news that two of our players ( M Nzuza and J Koppeschaar ) were to be promoted to the 1st team . We would like to thank all the Sixth Form players who sacrificed their studying time and played for their school in the fourth term .

3rd Team
This year the players who made up the third team certainly did not disappoint . They played with enthusiasm and commitment throughout the season and were a pleasure to coach . A result worth highlighting is the win against DHS in the first term . The team ran on to the court with the determination to win the encounter and this they did quite convincingly . The fourth term proved to be a different matter as the Sixth Form players moved out the system and the team seemed to lose momentum . However , when looking back on 2016 the boys can be proud of their achievements .

4th Team
The 2016 season showed a lot of promise with a large group of boys eager to play basketball . There were four teams in the Open section which showed there was great depth in the basketball community . Boys from the rugby fraternity showed up in large numbers for practices to get the season started . With a record of seven wins and two losses over the two seasons the boys never failed to entertain the crowd . The 4th team was captained by 1st XV rugby centre , N Mjara , who always motivated the boys . During the fourth term numbers were low due to exams and the 1st team soccer players came into the mix . M Hlongwa and M Ninela showed great leadership when some of the junior players were introduced into the team . Many thanks to the Fifth Form boys and the juniors who made the 2016 season a pleasant and successful one .

This season was challenging as the result of many players being promoted to the first team . With the lack in numbers the team had to dig deep to play and compete at the highest level . Each player contributed greatly to the success of the team . They were a determined and enthusiastic group , even when the odds were against them . The highlight of this season was scoring over 100 points in a game against St Nicholas . This surely made a statement that these talented boys are a force to contend with .
I would like to thank the school and parents for their support . I hope the boys can use the lessons from our time spent together to better themselves and those around them in true Maritzburg College spirit .
