Hudson House had eight prefects and seven Masters who did duty in the
House this year. This dedicated and efficient team ensured that the daily
running of the House was seamless and that the boys were well looked
after and encouraged to remain disciplined, diligent and respectful towards
others. As is seen in Hudson’s DNA, each boy, regardless of his Form, is
expected to be organised, self-disciplined and mindful of his fellow man.
2016 was a successful year for Hudson House. It was ably led by the Head
of House, F Manke, who enjoyed the respect of the boys and staff alike. On
a staffing front, the team saw a few members of staff come and go during
the course of the year. Messrs Chris Dutton and Michael Smith joined us
in January and Mr Smith spent seven months as part of the team before
leaving College. At the start of the third term Messrs Devon van der Merwe,
Steve Botha and Siya Sityana were added to the team. Mr Brandon Swart,
who had been the Housemaster of Hudson House from Term 4 in 2013,
left College at the end of June to take on a new challenge in the business
world in Cape Town. Mr Swart had a massive impact on the house and his
significant contribution was felt during his short time in charge as he made
many positive changes for the House.
Each year the ‘Boarder of the Year Award’ is voted for by the boys in each
form. They vote for and choose a candidate for displaying qualities that
are the essence of a Hudson’s boy: ‘for displaying camaraderie, loyalty,
friendship, commitment and achievement.’ The 2016 recipients were:
L Lenz (Third Form), J Vosloo (Fourth Form) and D Walden (Fifth Form).
The core focus for every Hudson House border is his academics. There are
many astute students who plough hours into their studies and receive just
reward for this. We also have a strong ‘peer-tutor’ programme whereby the
stronger boys in the House assist those who need some extra attention and
help. The consistent high achievers in Third Form were J Collocott (first in
form), S Dlamini (third in form), T Prinsloo, W Mkhize, M Ryan and L Lenz.
In Fourth Form special mention must go to N Welch, M Abel, T Moroney
and K Zvandaziva. Our Fifth Form students did not achieve as well as
they would have liked and need to pay a bit more attention to their studies
in 2017, but some consistent achievers were K Walsh, L Shabalala and
A Pieterse.
All boarders are expected to participate in the co-curricular programme
at Maritzburg College. This keeps them busy and fit and most importantly
teaches them to deal with the life lessons that sport and working within
a team present. Some stand-out achievers this year on the sporting front
were: J Pillay for his selection to the SA U19 squad for the World Cup,
B Sherwood and N Pio for being selected to represent the SA U17 Hockey
Team, D Dyer made the KZN U16 Action Cricket Team, D Charters made
the KZN Golf Team and N Mjara and J Truter were both selected to
represent the KZN 7s U17 team. M Green has excelled on his motorbike
this year as he has competed in the Enduro Division. We have a host
of Provincial and National selections across many codes, as well as a
number of cultural leaders, actors, debaters, singers and musicians. We
celebrate and share in the boys successes at the House Dinners and in
termly newsletters.
A note of thanks must go to Mr Marwick in his role as Director of Boarding.
The number of hours he spends ensuring that our BE is run efficiently, are
countless. He is committed to making the College BE a better place and
this is evident in the work he does. He is to be commended on another
successful year.
The running of an efficient House must also be credited to numerous other
groups of people. Mr Hackland and his estates’ staff who take care of the
maintenance, cleaning and laundry are to be commended on doing a
superb job. Mrs Lawson and her team in the kitchen ensure that the boys
enjoy tasty meals. The food that our boys receive is arguably the best in
the country, backed up by the compliments we receive from many schools
that visit our BE for festivals and tours. Sisters
