plans are moving forward despite
the changed circumstances. “We
generally open a show on the
summer solstice,” says Voigt, who
has walked through the property
at Paradise Ridge and found the
sculpture unscathed. She explains
that although the large-scale
works are in an area with trees,
they have gravel around them.
Byck-Barwick, whose husband
Dan is a winemaker, expects
construction on the new
buildings, which will be on the
previous footprint uphill from
the grove and meadow, to begin
in April or May, with the new

facilities opening in summer
2019. In the interim, Flanagan
Vineyards in Healdsburg has
offered Paradise Ridge office
space and a place to make
wine, and a storage shed that
escaped the blaze could serve as
a temporary tasting room. “We
feel really lucky,” she says. “What
matters is still there, and all the
people are safe. … People have
been really amazing. It’s like arms
being wrapped around you from
the community.”
Paradise Ridge, and hopefully
soon. “We do hope to be open
so people can come see the art.
… My dad is 85. This is his legacy.
We want to honor my parents,”
she says. “We want to move
past the fire, and we want our
community to feel whole again,”
she adds, observing that land
that was scorched and black is
turning green and coming back
to life. Paradise Ridge will too. “I
hope we’re going to see a really
magical spring,” she says.
