welcome

Welcome to our first Monthly Reading Guide !
We are introducing this new format so that we can share our favourite new books , exclusive author insights , and special features directly with readers . Our intention is to celebrate the diversity of stories available to us , and provide you with a guide to the latest books that you can take home from store and explore further .
Each Collins Booksellers store is independently owned and operated by passionate people who love books and their communities . We know you ’ ll find a welcoming and safe place every time you enter a Collins store . The knowledgeable owners and staff , being locals , are the perfect source for book advice and suggestions . While our guides will offer new release recommendations and special extras , you can always rely on the store staff to share their personal favourites with you .
Each month , we ’ ll choose a fiction , non-fiction , and kid ’ s Book of the Month and feature a recipe from a new cookbook . These selections will be handpicked based on which new releases we love , are excited about , and can ’ t wait to introduce to you . Each Book of the Month section will include a Q & A with the author or a staff review to provide more insights . You ’ ll also find a Stella Selection chosen by the lovely team at Stella . Stella is an organisation that promotes gender equality and cultural change in literature , and their annual prize is a celebration of Australian women and non-binary writers . Next month , we ’ ll be featuring one of their soon-to-be-released longlist titles for the 2024 prize .
We ’ re also proud to support the important work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation . For every copy sold of our First Nations Feature Book each month , Collins Booksellers will donate $ 1 to the Foundation . It is our hope that this will also bring some wonderful First Nations stories to even more readers . Super Snake by Gregg Dreise is our first pick . Super Snake is a gorgeously illustrated , funny , and heart-warming Dreamtime story and morality tale . We ’ re excited to feature this book , which will be the first in a new series , and share an example of the wonderful works being published by Magabala Books .
Gail Jones is the author of our first Fiction Book of the Month . Her new book One Another is a beautiful and captivating read that we ’ re excited to share with you . It tells the intertwining stories of Joseph Conrad and a young Tasmanian graduate student who is studying him . Jones has long been a favourite among Collins stores , staff and readers , and we are grateful that she has answered some questions for us . See page 3 for insights into her writing process , the strange life of Conrad , and what reading can bring to our lives .
Servo by David Goodwin is the first Non-Fiction Book of the Month . Servo brings this slice of Australian life , the humble service station , to vivid life . His Q & A on page 7 is an absolute must-read ! He shares his experience in writing the book , scary stories from his night-shift at the servo , and includes some very relatable tips for other service industry workers such as ‘ don ’ t let the bastards jib you .’
Our first Kid ’ s Book of the Month , Look Me in the Eye , was written by the always popular children ’ s author Jane Godwin . The timely story deals with navigating teen life in a time of constant surveillance , and we think it will really resonate with young readers . In her Q & A on page 12 , she talks about how she developed the story , what drew her to the topic , and the value of relating to the characters we read about .
As you ’ ll see in these pages , there are many kinds of stories and many kinds of books being released each month . We encourage you to look beyond your usual genre and find something new to enjoy . If you ’ re looking for inspiration , check out our Books of the Month !
Collect your reading guide from your local Collins Booksellers store each month and , as always , reach out to your local bookseller for more recommendations .
Happy reading ! Laura from Head Office
