Inside information
5G has been the coming thing for quite a while . It has arrived in certain major urban centres , and in 2024 it should arrive in many more .
But is it a solution in search of a problem – aren ’ t streaming services and gaming doing just fine on fixed access and 4G ? Particularly as most serious streaming and gaming is done on large TVs or monitors in the home ?
Some say there ’ s no such thing as too much capacity or too much speed available . And , maybe , as with roads , the more you build the more traffic you attract . But many of our contributors say an uptick in ‘ to consumer ’ capacity is by no means the only , or the main , point .
They point instead to the discrete broadcast modes ( both private for contribution and public for events ) as major steps forward . The extra capacity , particularly in terms of reduced latency , means quicker , more efficient return paths to production from OBs . This , in turn , facilitates multiple angles , multiple camera options and myriad data options at live events and in stadiums . At last , a media development that is built to enhance and encourage a live and collective event .
Away from media , 5G is also seen as the key that will unlock the real potential of the Internet of Things , providing the capacity for devices of any kind to communicate in real time in order to enhance their performance . GSMA predicts that over half of mobile connections will be 5G by the end of 2029 . But for that to happen the services it enables will need to be super attractive or self-funding , as I don ’ t see consumers placing much of a premium on it as it stands .
