Under the ADS Dental Transitions brand, PDA members will be served by two designated brokerage firms: American Practice Consultants and PMA Practice Transitions. Both firms are long-standing members of the ADS Dental Transitions network and bring decades of combined experience in dental practice appraisals, sales, and transition planning.

Best Card
As payment costs continue to rise, many dental practices are exploring surcharging as a way to offset credit card processing fees. But is it the right move for your practice?
What Is Surcharging? Surcharging is the practice of adding a fee, typically up to 3 %, when a patient pays with a credit card to cover the cost of processing that transaction. Debit cards cannot be surcharged.
When a credit card is used, the system identifies it and adds the applicable surcharge. The practice keeps the full original transaction amount, and the additional fee covers the processing expense.
Rules & Requirements Surcharging is regulated and requires careful compliance. Practices must:
• Post clear notices at the office, payment locations, website, and billing materials
• Register with card brands before starting
• Apply surcharges to all credit card types equally
• Ensure the surcharge matches actual processing costs
• Clearly show the surcharge on receipts
Pros & Cons Pros:
• Reduces or eliminates credit card processing expenses
• Encourages lower-cost debit payments
Cons:
• May negatively impact patient experience
• Cannot be applied to debit cards, HSA / FSA cards, or certain virtual insurance payments
• Regulations vary and can change
Before implementing surcharging, it’ s important to weigh financial savings against patient perception and compliance requirements. Consulting with a knowledgeable payment partner can help determine whether surcharging or traditional cost-plus pricing, is the better fit for your practice.
