Termes just completed a 30-foot Termesphere for the new Pioneer Bank building in Spearfish and was recently commissioned to do a piece for the fish hatchery in town .
Termes shows off a Termesphere made up entirely of black and white arrows . As it rotates he explains , “ as it comes this way and you get to the point you don ’ t have a choice anymore , you ’ re gonna see only black arrows . But when you go this way you get to see only white arrows .”
His 50-year work creating paintings on spheres is in some ways very similar to that particular Termesphere he describes . He no longer has a choice .
“ My brain doesn ’ t work that way ( in the flat ) anymore . It ’ s gone to that other dimension and it kind of stays there .”
You can find Dick and his work at the Termesphere Gallery at 1920 Christensen Drive in Spearfish . Call first to check hours . You can also visit him online at termespheres . com and listen to him explain perspective and his art at youtu . be / zfPhLsmfqbg .
TOP : The colors , the imagery , the design of Termespheres captivates your imagination . Some test your perception of geometry while others float effortlessly , pushing the limits of what is truly possible . BOTTOM : Dick Termes has created a form of art that allows the inside to come out , challenging our perception of perspective . Look again and see if you notice anything you may have missed the first time . Photos by Leslie SIlverman
