Caring for the Oral Health Of Individuals with Special Needs Course This course is designed with three modules for three audiences: 1 Oral health professionals 2 Allied health professionals 3 Caregivers and individuals Each module has five webinars with supporting documents. These are the five webinars: • Introduction: Defines individuals with special needs and outlines the evaluation needed to develop an interprofessional healthcare plan. Should be viewed before any other webinars to appreciate the remaining webinars. • Oral Health Basics: Provides a simplified overview of oral disease and oral care basics. How to prevent oral disease, basic oral hygiene practices, and the importance of oral health to overall health are reviewed. • Addressing medical complication in the oral care plan: Provides overview of oral health and overall health connection. Discusses modifications needed to address systemic disease during oral care. Focus is on modifications in care, not on understanding the medical complexities or disabilities. • Non-Pharmacologic Behavior Management Techniques: Provides management techniques to overcome resistant and aggressive behaviors. Discusses how to incorporate these techniques in the oral care plan. Provides guidance on consent issues associated with behavior management. • Medical Immobilization and Protective Stabilization (Mips) for Professionals: Builds on the non-pharmacologic behavior management techniques webinar that should be viewed before this webinar. Discusses immobilization and stabilization techniques for use during in office care and home care plans. Stresses how to safely provide immobilization and stabilization during oral care. Provides insight into how to share these techniques with direct caregivers and individuals. A list of learning objectives for each webinar is provided along with questions and answers for continuing education purposes. Alicia Risner-Bauman, DDS, FADPD, DABSCD Dr. Alicia earned her Doctorate in Dentistry at the University of Iowa, has a Diplomate from the American Board Special Care Dentistry, and has a Fellow from the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities. She served as PDA representative to the ADA Council on Advocacy for Access and Prevention, Chair of the PDA Access to Oral Health Advisory Group, and served on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Coalition for Oral Health (PCOH), and as the Special Needs Dentistry Consultant for the PA Head Start Association. She is a member of the Health Advisory Group for the Governor of PA. She has been an active policy maker with the New York State Dental Association and the NYS Special Care Dentistry Task Force. She worked as an Assistant Professor at LECOM School of Dental Medicine. She is currently practicing at a developmental center for the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. She has several publications and a history of presentations relating to advocacy and treatment for complex patients and access to care.
