Back in 1946, the war had just ended and a young soldier by the name of Grant Taylor was shipped back home. Soon after, Mayotta Winslow caught the eye of Grant and before long they were pretty good friends and soon after wedding bells were ringing for this couple. A son was born and they named him Gary. Gary was their pride and joy. He passed away about 18 years ago, but is still held his memories close to their hearts to this very day. Grant worked for Canada Post as Postmaster in Lennoxville, both sorting mail and dealing with the customers. Mayotta was the perfect wife and looked right after the house. She loves Grant with all her heart. We don't know their secret to 70 years together, but they sure have one. Mayotta was asked if she ever thought of leaving Grant. “Nope, but I thought about killing him a few times!” she said, with a chuckle. They just took the good with the bad and stayed strong. Mayotta said all she has to do is say “If you don't like it, there's the door,” and that door was never taken by these special two. Grant and Mayotta are now in their 90s but they are still very active and seldom miss a good card party or dance. Grant is the only living Charter member of the Army-Navy-Air Force Unit #318, a fact that he is very proud of. Kevin MacIver, President of the ANAF Unit 318, presented Grant with a lovely platter engraved for the occasion. Richard Grey Vise-President of Bury Canadian Legion Branch 48 in Bury, Que., which they have belonged to forever, presented Mayotta with flowers. The hall was packed to the rafters with family, friends and Legion members from both far and near. The band featured David McBurney and friends and they kept all entertained with old time music all evening. The dance floor was packed all night. Grant got up and sang a few songs like only Grant can do. It was a very nice party for two very well-loved people. –Corey Bellam FRIENDSHIP FORCE WALK IN SHERBROOKE Tuesday evening, we went to Parc Jacques Cartier in Sherbrooke to attend the 12th annual Sherbrooke Friendship Force walk. This small walk was done in honor of World Friendship Day, which is March 1. They walked around the Lac des Nations with lit torches. This is an excellent chance to open up to all cultures in the world, despite the many conflicts taking place, and to meet people from all cultures in one place, under the theme “Living Together.” This event is organized with the help of Destination Sherbrooke and this year’s Honorary President was Mercedes Berra. Owner of Mercedes Travel Agency. She also sits on the supervising board of the Lac des Nations Caisse Desjardins. This event is done to bring all together in a very friendly atmosphere. It was amazing how many countries were represented at this walk. The walk kicked off at around 7 p.m. after a very brief talk and all getting their handheld torches lit from two friendship torches outside. It was then time to walk around the lake. The International Friendship Force has been around for 38 years and has brought people from all over the world together and formed many solid friendships over the 38 years. Sherbrooke has only held this for 12 of those years but fully intends to hold it for many years to come. –Corey Bellam HOPE CHURCH DONATION SALE Saturday morning we took a drive over to Lennoxville to attend the Hope Community Church 2nd annual Indoor Donation Sale. Hope tried this type of sale for the first time last year and it was huge. This year they decided to have it again and it was even bigger. The hall was full of treasures that people had dropped off over the past few weeks. All these articles were donated to Hope to be sold to help raise money for the Cornerstone Food Bank in Lennoxville and also the Hope Community Church Refugee Fund. This caring Church has sponsored four families that are escaping war overseas. The refugees haven't arrived yet, but according to the Church they will be coming soon to be safe in Canada. –Corey Bellam LUNENBURG PIE BAKING CONTEST The Lunenburg Top of the Common Committee invites bakers of all ages, with residence in any state, to participate in their maple-flavored pie-baking contest.
