Ask Greta

Dear Greta,
Recently, my brother asked my mother to cosign on a loan to buy equipment. He had lost his job and thought he could start his own business. He wasn ' t able to pull it off, though. My mother has since had to take over making the payments or otherwise damage her perfect credit. My brother has now found a job, but tells my mother he cannot begin payments on the loan. She has nothing in writing to keep him accountable. In the meantime, he has taken out another loan and bought some expensive items for his apartment with money my mom doesn ' t know he has. She hasn ' t seen any of it because she lives out of state. What makes it worse is he never has anything nice to say about her, in spite of all the good things she ' s done for him and our family. My mother lives a quiet, responsible life, is old and on limited funds, and I don ' t feel that she deserves this treatment. She can barely afford her own rent. Should I tell her what ' s going on?
- Creep ' s sister Dear Sister,
First, I think you should confront your brother about his actions. Give him the opportunity to straighten this out. If he doesn ' t, you are within your rights to let your mom know what ' s going on. She can then contact the loan company to see about transferring the debt into his name alone. She ' ll need his signature to do so, of course, so they will have to work things out between them. Please don ' t tell her he has nothing nice to say about her- she doesn ' t need that hurtful information on top of everything else. It is so important to have agreements in writing when you lend money- even to family- to keep these kinds of things from happening.
