This is an excellent @ RIMonthly story by Philip Eil about the shifting local news landscape , including Rhode Island ’ s own renaissance man , Bill Bartholomew , & ecoRI News , the nonprofit environmental news site I ’ m proud to serve as board president . It takes a village .

I ’ m writing in regard to the “ Get Crafty ” article . I love supporting local artisans and do so frequently . You missed a gem in Rhode Island ’ s real north ! Art Box Studio in Burrillville has it all . The owner , Ellie Forte , has work by local artisans for sale in her studio and displays local artists in her gallery on a rotating basis . And if you want to get your own craft on , Art Box offers classes and workshops . You can even just drop in and decide what you ’ d like . I wish more Rhode Islanders could discover this hidden gem .

It was truly a joy to write the essay about my dad ! Despite having read it a million times , I cried when I saw it in print . The photos you selected were perfect , and the timing was incredible — he would have been 100 this past December . Thank you for the opportunity to publish this piece . It meant the world to me . I ’ ve already had several people tell me that it has touched them , too . My dad is still inspiring people !

I was sad to read in the January issue that the calendar listing is only available online . One of the main reasons I subscribe to the magazine is to see what ’ s happening during the months to come . I rip the pages out and circle what I ’ m interested in going to . It ’ s not the same reading this info online .

The moniker “ and Providence Plantations ” was implied [ by the article ] to have been a reference to slavery . It meant small settlements and had nothing to do with what is now the accepted meaning of the word “ plantation .”
