Breed All About It !
Spotlight on : The Pomeranian
Description : The Pomeranian is small , toy-sized dog , but it is sturdier rather than delicate . Their thick , beautiful coat comes in many patterns and colors , including red , orange , white , cream , blue , brown , black , black and tan , wolf sable , orange , sable , brindle , blue merle , and parti-color .
Temperament : Pomeranians are the tiniest of the Spitz breeds , but have the courage of much bigger dogs , as they don ' t seem to realize or care how small they are ! They are very bright , vivacious , and affectionate , and can be a wonderful family companion . Caution should be taken , though , when playing with small or very active children . This breed is proud , perky , intelligent , eager to learn , and very loyal to his or her family . Its affectionate nature endears it to many . One of the most independent of the toy breeds , it needs a firm , gentle hand . The Pomeranian ' s spirit makes it well-liked by people who do not usually care for toy dogs . Poms usually get along well with other dogs and household animals without any problems . They make good little watchdogs , especially because of their fondness for barking . These happy pups are good at learning tricks , but need to see their owners as boss , or they will become very demanding . Poms can be very headstrong , so early training and socialization is highly recommended . Because of their small size , poms can make good companions for the elderly , or people living in apartments . They also make great therapy dogs , excel at agility , and can be trained as hearing assistance dogs .
Average Height / Weight : AKC Standards say the breed should be 7 - 12 inches in height , and weigh 3 - 7 pounds , but many are between 10 - 15 , and some poms grow as large as 18 pounds .
Health Issues : Pomeranians are prone to dislocated patella ( kneecap ), slipped stifle , heart problems , eye infections , skin irritations , and early tooth decay and loss . It is recommended that they are fed dry dog food to help keep the teeth and gums in good condition . Newborn Pom puppies are very tiny and fragile . Three newborns can be held in the palm of one ’ s hand ! Smaller poms sometimes need to deliver by cesarean section . Poms can be very sensitive to heat , so limit their time outdoors in hot summer weather .
Exercise : Poms need moderate exercise . A daily walk should suffice . Life Expectancy : 12 - 16 years .
Grooming : The Pom has a thick double coat , which should be brushed frequently . The cottony undercoat is shed once or twice a year . Clean their eyes and ears often and take them for regular dental check-ups , as small dogs are prone to tooth and gum issues .
