As I write this, I’ m hunkered down in front of our gas fireplace, enjoying the commercials during the Super Bowl, and thinking about the fact that this article will be published
MCLAIN in March. That means a return to daylight savings time on March 9, and the spring equinox on March 20, bringing extra daylight and hopefully, warmer weather. It also means the need to begin the planning for the annual Festival of the Arts in October, and our new Wilsonville Music Festival @ Charbonneau in August.
Wilsonville Festival of the Arts @ Charbonneau, Oct. 10-12: The call to artists will be issued in mid-March, with acceptance of applications beginning in April. We will update the Charbonneau Arts Association website and kick off our outreach to potential sponsors. We have the nucleus of a team in place and invite volunteers who want to be part of the Organizing Committee. Artist registration and management, artisan booth show, fine art gallery, festival store, opening night gala reception, silent auction, sign placement, student gallery, volunteer coordination— every component of the event has a chair or co-chairs to do the necessary advance planning and to manage their part of the festival during the weekend. Breaking it up into manageable pieces means that it comes together successfully, without overtaxing our cadre of volunteers. In 2024, we had 150 volunteers. Some worked a few hours during the festival weekend, while others joined the organizing committee and began the
planning months ahead. We need some of both. I have already heard from community members who want to help. Will you join them? Let’ s talk about what you can do to help. Email me at cathi @ mclainco. com.
Wilsonville Music Festival @ Charbonneau, Aug. 2-3: Last month’ s article mentioned our new music festival, funded by a $ 10,000 grant from the city of Wilsonville’ s Arts, Culture & Heritage Commission. Our initial plans included using the yellow one tee box and fairway on a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon in July so we could mount a world-class blues festival that would attract up to 1,000 attendees and raise significant funds for our support of high school arts programs. After those tentative plans were reported, the Charbonneau Golf Club board voted against our plans to pay for the use of the yellow course. Rather than return the city’ s grant funds, the organizer we are consulting has proposed a less ambitious program that can be held in the Clubhouse Dining Room and outdoor covered Pavilion, with two stages providing alternating acts throughout the weekend. Alice Galloway and her Music Stage Organizing Committee are working to make this work for everyone. Plans are to host a food truck, offer a cash bar and a place for dancing. More details will be reported in upcoming Villager articles.
Grant awarded to Canby HS: We ended 2024 with the presentation of a $ 10,000 check to the art teachers at Wilsonville High School during their Dec. 20 pep rally. We started 2025 with a similar presentation to the Canby High School Art Department during an assembly at the school on Jan. 31. As reported earlier, both schools will apply the funds to the purchase of new kilns and pottery equipment, display panels and art supplies
