Civil engineering is“ the profession of designing and executing structural works that serve the general public, such as dams, bridges … highways, power plants … and other infrastructure.” Civil engineering is critical to society, enabling economic growth, accessing essential resources, and facilitating housing and transportation. Civil engineering spans many specialties, including structural, transportation, geotechnical, utility, coastal, environmental, construction, and more.
The workforce of civil engineers in the United States in 2022 to 2023 was approximately 330,000 to 340,000. In New Hampshire, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 1,540 civil engineers in May 2023.
Civil engineering landmarks in the United States include the Golden Gate Bridge, the Hoover Dam, and the Cape Cod Canal.
