Easter Hazards by Cheyenne Pratt , Veterinary Technician - Calico Creek Vets

The Easter holiday poses some hazards to our pets , so it ' s important to be " eggstra " careful so we don ' t put them in danger . Here is a list of the most common Easter hazards :
Lilies : If you have cats , you should probably just avoid bringing lilies into your home . You should also refrain from giving lilies as gifts to friends and family that have cats . Lilies are a very common Easter flower that are extremely toxic to cats . Every part of the lily is toxic if ingested , including the water they sit in . The toxicity of this plant can cause kidney failure in cats that leads to death if not quickly treated . Lilies are not toxic to dogs , but may cause GI upset ( vomiting / diarrhea ) if ingested .
Chocolate : By now , most people are aware that chocolate is toxic to pets . The darker the chocolate , the more toxic it is . There are more cases of chocolate ingestion on Easter than any other holiday ! This is because Easter candy is typically hidden around the yard or house and is easily accessible to our pets . Never leave your pet unsupervised around candy and make sure it stays out of their reach . Chocolate toxicity effects cats and dogs the same , but cats are less likely to eat chocolate because they do not have a " sweet tooth ." That ' s right , cats cannot taste sugar !
Easter Grass : Traditional Easter grass is made from brightly colored strips of plastic . For some reason , this indigestible grass is very appealing to dogs and cats . Easter grass is a choking hazard and if ingested , it can get tangled in the GI tract and cause a life-threatening blockage . Pet owners should consider using pet-friendly alternatives in Easter baskets , like paper grass or tissue paper .
Xylitol : Chocolate is not the only dangerous candy to worry about in an Easter basket . Xylitol is an artificial sweetener commonly used in sugar-free gum and candy , and it is more toxic than chocolate . Just a small amount of Xylitol can quickly drop your pet ' s blood sugar and / or cause liver failure .
People food : The majority of decadent holiday foods contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs and cats ( i . e . garlic , onions , grapes , raisins , nuts ). Nontoxic foods like ham or other fatty foods , can cause vomiting , diarrhea , and pancreatitis .
If your pet happens to ingest any of these things , you should call an emergency vet right away . Do not wait because the sooner your pet gets treated , the better the outcome will be .
