Dear Greta ,
I have three children and seven grandkids . Most of my family decided a few years back to stop giving gifts to everyone because of the expense . I never felt right about that though , so I continue buying for the whole family , including those that live several states away . That , of course , is an added expense , because I have to ship the gifts to them . My complaint isn ' t that , it is this : After all the time , effort , and expense I go through , I don ' t get so much as a phone call or card to thank me . This really hurts my feelings and dampens my enthusiasm for celebrating everyone ' s birthdays , special occasions , and holidays . I don ' t think it ' s asking too much for someone to take five minutes to acknowledge a gift , do you ?

Dear Grandma ,
I understand how you ' d feel hurt and unappreciated . When I was a child , my parents made me write thankyou cards every time I received a gift , no matter the size . This , however , seems to be a lost art , as is politeness these days . There are several ways to deal with this dilemma : 1 ) Don ' t get them anything anymore ! 2 ) Only give them gifts when they come to visit you in person , then you should , at least , get a verbal thank you . 3 ) Be straight with your children and tell them how you feel . It ' s not like you ' re asking for anything unreasonable - just simple acknowledgement that you went out of your way to make them feel special . This should come naturally , but for whatever reasons , some people are too self-absorbed to care about anyone else anymore .
