Kou Tukala Nyan is a multidisciplinary artist who taps into creative writing , memoir , journalism , performance and curation to tell stories . She has written for Rhode Island Monthly and Providence Media and curated more than twenty community and fundraising events for various occasions and organizations . In this month ’ s Current [“ S . O . U . L . Purpose ”], she sat down with Contessa Brown , who founded Cafe S . O . U . L ., to learn more about her drive to create a safe and artistic space in Providence .
Former Rhode Island Monthly intern Sophia Failla graduated from Roger Williams University , where she majored in architecture and minored in creative writing . She improved her writing skills during the internship and pursued a story for Current on Chris Monti [“ The Music Man ”], a musician who performs for patients at Rhode Island Hospital , Hasbro Children ’ s Hospital and Bradley Hospital . “ Writing about his work encourages me to want to meet more people and write about their experiences ,” Failla says .
As someone who is hoping to add a furry friend to her household in the near future , putting together the pets feature package [“ Consider the Paw-sibilities !”] was both a blast and an enlightening experience for Rhode Island Monthly Digital Editor Kaitlyn Murray . “ I ’ m a lifelong animal lover who grew up with a variety of pets ( dogs , cats , hermit crabs , you name it ) and it ’ s been wonderful seeing just how committed Little Rhody is to making sure its animal residents are just as loved and cared for as their human counterparts ,” she says . “ Luckily , our publisher ’ s fur baby , Jake the Wonder Dog , has been a regular in the office lately and helped me sniff out the best of the best !” 🆁
