Fitness class gives resident a new “ spring ” in her step

Shirley Treadwell , a longtime resident at SpringRidge at Charbonneau , has a new spring in her step thanks to the active retirement community ’ s invigorating “ Get Fit Life ” program . Offered twice a week , the hour-long class inspires Shirley and her neighbors to stay active while improving balance , flexibility , strength and mental well-being .
“ I didn ’ t realize I ’ d been walking flatfooted my whole life , almost waddling ,” she explained . “ One of the things ‘ Get Fit Lite ’ emphasizes is gait and using the heel-toe pattern . You don ’ t realize how much stress you put on your body by walking the wrong way .”
Instructor Jill Walker , who has taught at SpringRidge since 2007 , says it ’ s these real-world benefits that bring her the greatest satisfaction .
“ There are no words to describe seeing the wonderful progress participants make from month-to-month ,” she added . “ It ’ s truly a testament to their hard work and commitment to the class .”
“ Get Fit Lite ” also focuses on preemptive wellness and movement , targeting residents ’ all-around health to help maintain their independence and keep injuries at bay . Each class incorporates exercise balls , bands and weights and is designed for all fitness levels .
Resident Curt Smith finds the social aspects of the class as appealing as the physical benefits . It ’ s a great time to catch up with friends and neighbors and have fun while working up a sweat .
“ It ’ s such a joyous atmosphere ,” said Jill . “ Exercising releases endorphins , and they trigger a positive feeling in the body . Residents often say , ‘ This isn ’ t exercise ; this is fun time ,’ or they ’ ll tell me what a blast they had in class . I think that ’ s one of the things that encourages them to come week after week .”
Curt and his workout partners are currently learning a balance routine — perfect for fall prevention — to Michael Jackson ’ s hit song “ The Way You Make Me Feel .”
Research shows learning coordination can also boost brain health . The memorization of steps and the focus required increases brain activity , promoting better cognitive function .
Jill , who also teaches aerobics dance classes at the Charbonneau Country Club , continuously educates Spring- Ridge residents on the importance of staying active . In fact , during the pandemic restrictions , she sent cards and words of encouragement to her students about the benefits of exercising .

“ You have to keep moving . Everyone can do something , regardless of age ,” she advises . “ Exercise is like lubrication for the joints . You ’ ll be surprised at what you can accomplish simply by trying .”
For SpringRidge residents , there are a wealth of on-site opportunities for physical activity . From water fitness to virtual gaming and everything in-between , the creative Zest Department plans health and wellness programs to pique every interest . The community also boasts a state-of-the-art fitness center with equipment specifically designed for older adults .
With her newfound stride , Shirley looks forward to warmer spring weather when she can exercise outdoors to show off that spring in her step !
Nestled on an impeccable , 10-acre parcel of natural beauty and serenity , SpringRidge at Charbonneau is located in one of Oregon ’ s most desirable master-planned residential communities . One- and two-bedroom residences , set amidst lush outdoor courtyards and verandas , feature fully equipped kitchens , a washer and dryer and a 24-hour emergency call system .
