Though she knew of her family ’ s presence at the cemetery , Gerri Baker Parry didn ’ t think much about their history in the region until she joined the Pleasant View Cemetery Board of Directors .
“ It ’ s a sense of taking it for granted that there were seven generations there and not realizing until later in life how unique that is , and now exploring that is fascinating . Every day we come up with a new tidbit ,” Baker Parry said .
Ralph Baker , for his part , reveres the families who risked their lives to travel the Oregon Trail with little understanding of what was in store . To him , it speaks to the perseverance and hope of that generation .
“ I can ’ t imagine what they sacrificed to do that . I hope when they got here it was what they wanted ,” he said .
And the Baker descendants are grateful to Lehan for her efforts to uncover more about the origins of their family than they ever could have imagined . Her efforts were conducted mostly using Ancestry . com and associated documents like past censuses and marriage licenses .
Ralph added that Lehan has done even more than that — revitalizing a cemetery that was once ramshackle through a number of projects .
“ I ’ ve learned more about my own family from Charlotte than I have from my own family . I ’ m grateful for her research and determination ,” Ralph said .

As we look at the calendar and realize that SPRING is just around the corner , we all have different thoughts . Those who have been snow-birding somewhere warm are anxious to get home but sad to leave the sunshine . Those who have stayed home are awaiting flower buds , green grass and warm temperatures . Regardless of which group you are a part of , we are very much looking forward to our Opening Day on April 7 . Our fingers and toes are crossed that COVID-19 doesn ’ t control what we can or can ’ t do this
season .
Announcement : Eclectic competition posting has been done the past two years by the committee chair due to COVID-19 . The Board has decided to return the weekly posting responsibility to each member . It ’ s not difficult — a box containing a scorecard for each member ( alphabetically ) showing all three courses appears . On play dates , each member pulls their card and circles the scores of holes played each week ( 9 or 18 ). The first time you play this season , you circle the scores of all of your holes . Thereafter , you only circle the holes with an improved score . At the end of the season , your lowest score ( from ALL of your games ) is added together and your course handicap ( from the beginning of the season ) is subtracted to determine your net Eclectic score . Prizes are awarded and everyone is eligible to play . It ’ s fun , costs you nothing and you may win a prize at the end of the season ! Easy ! ( If you ’ d like more information or have questions , please contact Laura Noffke at lgnoffke @ comcast . net ).
We asked our rules guru , Joann Linville , for a rule reminder to get us thinking about the season . She shares clarifications about “ What to do if I can ’ t find my ball ? Now what ?”
Do I have to go back to the tee and hit another shot under penalty of stroke and distance ? CWGA has adopted a local rule for Day ’ s Play that allows an additional option . If your ball has not been found or is certain to be out of bounds , you may drop a ball , for two penalty strokes , on the edge of the fairway — no nearer to the hole than where the ball is estimated to have come to rest or gone out of bounds . This option cannot be used if your ball is in a penalty area , you have deemed it unplayable or if you have hit a provisional ball under stroke and distance . CWGA encourages our members to use this option to speed up play and make the game more enjoyable for everyone . Happy golfing !!
So stop and smell the fragrances of spring . Feel hopeful ! Be sure to mark opening day , April 7 , on your calendar . See you on the links .
