Artists from around globe explore theme of home in exhibit

Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council sponsors works online , at library through March

BY COREY BUCHANAN
Featuring works by artists from across the country and world , the Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council is hoping to exemplify what it means to feel at home through an exhibit that runs through March .
The virtual and in-person exhibit , titled “ Going Home ,” includes 37 pieces of art inspired by three words : “ nest ,” “ home ” and “ habitat .” The pieces are available for viewing online at Wilsonvillearts . org and 10 are installed at the Wilsonville Public Library .
Arts and culture council organizer Benjamin Mefford said artists represented in the exhibit hail from countries such as Ukraine , India , Slovakia ,
Russia , Germany and Malaysia , as well as states like Illinois , Georgia , Washington and South Dakota . Mefford found participants by working through a wide array of organizations that put out calls to artists . The commonalities among the artwork submitted stood out most to him .
“ I ’ m surprised how much connection there is between different artworks ,” he said . “ That ’ s the exciting part for me . When I look at them it ’ s not obvious to me that they came from around the world . I find it reassuring that when we ’ re communicating with visual art , we ’ re often tapping into some core basic things about humans .”
Mefford noted a Filipino who painted a child sitting on a swing set with their parents and a Georgia artist who painted a rocking chair as a couple of standout works in the show .
“ They all felt connected to memories . I thought that was a powerful element myself ,” he said .
Some of the mediums represented include printmaking , painting , drawing and collage . Mefford hoped the exhibit would spark reflection .
“ I think it ’ s hopefully an interesting conversation starter for people to think about their own relationship with home and how that ’ s changed during the pandemic ,” Mefford said .
