Remember too , that at any given moment there were many , many other riders present , all jockeying for position around and / or through all these obstacles . And there was weird stuff , too . At one point for example , I began to see this odd track in the mud . Two parallel line , about three or four inches apart . The only thing I could imagine was the unlikely scenario of someone pushing an old , steelwheeled wheelbarrow down the trail – until I came upon a rider making his way along with no rear tire on his bike at all . Yep , those marks on the trail were from the two edges of his bike ’ s rim , and what ’ s even more bizarre is that his tire was just not off the rim , but was missing entirely ! Another one which surprised me was when one of the pros came by , evidently on his second lap around . As he passed , I saw what appeared to be some sort of creature , clinging to the guy ’ s back ! This really freaked me out , as by this time I figured just about anything was possible out there on the Blackwater course . I later found this was the great Aussie-pro , Geoff Ballard , and for fun he had strapped on his daughter ’ s Koala bear backpack , complete with goggles . Funny now , freaky then .
