You may want to stop in a sporting goods store and pick up a
pair of earplugs on your next trip out. The truth is, that all of
life's tasks are made more challenging if you are having trouble hearing. You will be glad to know that most people can
prevent hearing loss from happening. There are two kinds of
hearing loss. When sound can't get through the inner ear, the
part where sound is translated, it's known as conductive loss.
Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is physical damage to the fibers of the inner ear, the auditory nerve or the brain
such that sounds are misinterpreted or weakened. A common
side effect of sensorineural hearing loss is continuous or sporadic ringing or buzzing in the ears, known as tinnitus. It takes
a physician or audiologist to determine which kind of hearing
loss you are suffering from. They will use a combination of your
health history and diagnostic exams.

among people who forcefully use cotton swabs to clean their
ears. When doing this the ear wax is actually packed farther
into the ear canal. Gently wiping the ears with cotton swabs is
acceptable. If your ears have a tendency to have substantial wax
buildup, check with your physician for advice. At times, ears
could have extra fluid from allergies or infections or the middle
ear has hardening of the bones.
When you feel there is a need, wear ear plugs. You should especially consider earplugs whenever you are working with power
tools, even lawn tools like your lawnmower or power edger, target shooting, playing video games, watching movies or listening
to music where the volume is very high.
For a problem with conductive hearing loss you might have
something as easy to fix as wax in the ear canal, or it could be
serious as needing surgery on the middle ear bones, called otosclerosis. For the problem of sensorineural loss, treatment could
require the use of a digital hearing aid, which works really well
with some people, to cochlear implants for those dealing with
specific inner ear trouble.
As a general rule, if you find yourself having to speak louder
to be heard above whatever background noise there is, this is a
strong sign to either leave the area of the background noise or
use ear plugs (or headphones) to protect your own hearing.

If someone has a hearing loss in just one ear, they may be dealing with an acoustic neuroma - a benign tumor that can most
likely affect the healing nerve. Left untreated with surgery, the
tumor generally is slow to grow but will in time cause total
hearing loss or other difficulties. Chronic ear infections, mumps,
measles, scarlet fever and meningitis affect many people. All of
these can cause hearing loss and such loss should be discussed
with your physician.
Anything which obstructs the ear canal interferes with the flow
of sound. This includes ear wax. Ear wax blockages are common
