One afternoon I had picked up a stray dog on my way to work
and was not in a position to take him home. After having a coworker do some quick research, we learned that the only shelter
in the city that would accept strays was Animal Control.

When I arrived at their facility and saw the sheer volume of
homeless animals in need, I knew immediately that I wanted
to be involved. A little known fact is that Indianapolis Animal
Control Center has an open door policy and takes in over 17,000
animals annually. It is the largest facility in the state of Indiana.

Since 2008, Meridian-Kessler resident Jane Ruppert has volunteered
her time and talent with Indianapolis Animal Care & Control
(IACC). Read her story about how she became involved with the
shelter, and several facts that few know about IACC.
Animals at the shelter are up against incredible odds every day.
While many sad things happen to stray animals around the city,
many incredible acts of kindness, selflessness, and generosity
occur as well. I wanted to be a part of it and help make it better.
Since I began volunteering at Animal Control, I continue to
witness many positive changes each year.
