LOOK BACK:
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Performance
The BSO was honored to join with the City of Baltimore in a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King on January 19 at the Meyerhoff. This free Symphony in the City concert showcased the Morgan State University Choir, and lobby installations curated by the Mayor ' s Office of Arts, Culture & Entertainment and Charm TV. Music Director Jonathon Heyward reflected on the significance of the event at the top of the program, saying:“ Dr. King understood the power of art, how music can awaken empathy, strengthen resolve and bring us closer to the beloved community he always envisioned.”
LOOK AHEAD:
GospelFest
Now in its fourth year, GospelFest returns on April 9 at 7:30 pm to the Meyerhoff for a powerful celebration of faith, heritage, and community— honoring the life and legacy of gospel icon, Richard Smallwood. Featuring HBCU choirs from Morgan State University, Coppin State University, Howard University, and Bowie State University, alongside the BSO, this one-night-only tribute brings soaring harmonies and the enduring spirit of gospel to the stage in a deeply moving communal experience.
IN MEMORIAM MICHAEL G. BRONFEIN July 26, 1955 – January 21, 2026
The BSO is deeply saddened by the passing of Michael Bronfein. A longstanding member of the BSO family, Michael first joined the Board of Directors in 1993, became Vice Chair in 2000, and served as Chair 2006-2011, a pivotal period in the BSO ' s history marked by Marin Alsop ' s arrival and the founding of BSO OrchKids. Michael remained an active Chair Laureate and staunch BSO champion, most recently serving on the annual Gala Celebration Committee. The BSO would not be the Orchestra nor organization it is today without Michael ' s leadership, and we are profoundly grateful for his enduring legacy.
