Jaime An

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CELLO
For BSO Assistant Principal Cellist Jaime An, a perfect day off in Baltimore starts with visiting a dog-friendly cafe with her 12-yearold Maltese, Lulu, then taking a walk through Patterson Park. After enjoying some time outside, An journeys to Fells Point to indulge in one of the many waterfront restaurants. She then often finds herself back at the Meyerhoff to enjoy a BSO concert and cheer on her colleagues from her seat.
An joined the BSO in 2023 and moved to Baltimore with Lulu that same year. Since settling into her new city, An has found that the best way to spend time outside of the hall is rest and relaxation.
“ I ' ve learned over the past few years to take time to de-stress,” An said. " Sometimes, my job can be a little stressful, but it’ s good stress; it ' s good pressure. We have the ability to touch people ' s lives through music, and I think that ' s what adds to the pressure. That ' s why I walk so much, I hang out with Lulu, and I ' ve started doing hobbies that I previously had to put down in order to get this position.”
One of those hobbies is taking dance classes, specifically jazz and hip-hop.
“ I remember when I was 15, I had to choose between cello or dance; there was no time for both,” An said. " Now that I ' m working as a musician, I feel like I finally have time to explore my interest in dance. It ' s nice to fulfill that younger dream of mine."
Baltimore has become a place where An can follow where her creativity takes her.
“ After being here for a few years, I feel like Baltimore has so much to offer in terms of culture,” An said.“ I get why it ' s called Charm City. There ' s so many little pockets of goodness that you can find here.”
