members sang, rather than played, their parts. The event was also a major financial success, raising $ 600,000— setting a bar of Gala fundraising results only more recently repeated( when calculated for inflation) since Jonathon Heyward’ s arrival.
Before her passing in 2011 at the age of 83, Ruth established the Ruth Carol Fund, a private foundation, to continue her charitable efforts. Through gifts made during her lifetime and through ongoing coordination with the Fund, there is a list of Baltimore organizations with named programs, spaces, and positions reflective of Ruth’ s lifelong appreciation and dedication, creating an enduring legacy:
• The Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies at the Baltimore Museum of Art, where Ruth was deeply involved.
• The Ruth Marder Studio Theatre at Towson University, where Ruth had been a member of its board of visitors and fine and performing arts board.
• The Ruth R. Marder Director of Learning & Community Engagement at The Walters Art Museum, where Ruth had been a docent.
• The Ruth R. Marder Arts Endowment Fund supporting Artworks programming at Maryland Public Television, where Ruth chaired the Society for Excellence in Television.
The BSO is honored to join this esteemed list of anchor institutions visibly celebrating Ruth’ s devotion and generosity. Recently, the Ruth Carol Fund granted the BSO a $ 2.5 million gift to strengthen the Orchestra’ s endowment and fuel strategic capital investments at the Meyerhoff. To recognize such a leadership gift and a lifetime of shared music making, the BSO has named Grand Tier Box E Left as“ The Ruth R. Marder Box.”
Grand Tier Box E Left— Dedicated to Ruth R. Marder
“ The Ruth Carol Fund is delighted to continue Ruth ' s long-standing support of the BSO. This gift furthers Ruth ' s commitment to the Orchestra ' s continued vitality and its home at the Meyerhoff. This recognition of her support, and her permanent association with her favorite location in Symphony Hall, would bring her great joy.”

BUILDING AN ENDURING LEGACY AT THE BSO
Established in 2006 as a separate 501( c)( 3) organization, the Baltimore Symphony Endowment Trust( BSET) holds the funds given to the BSO to be invested in perpetuity, providing generous operating support in the form of an annual draw( calculated on a trailing 12-quarter average).
A robust endowment enables the Orchestra to be secure, nimble, and innovative. Just as the Ruth Carol Fund has made an outright gift to endow in perpetuity Box E Left in Ruth Marder ' s name, endowment gifts can be unrestricted to support highest and best use, or can be designated for specific purposes, including named chairs within the Orchestra, commissioning programs, and education initiatives. Endowment gifts can also be made in a variety of ways, including outright and by bequest.
