Off to the races at Maple Grove Days
Maple Grove Days continues tradition with the 28th annual Jim Deane Memorial Rice Lake Classic Run. It’ s the perfect way to begin the morning by running with family, neighbors, friends, high school alumni or co-workers.
This 3.7-mile run around Rice Lake offers a beautiful, scenic route in natural settings winding through neighborhoods, natural forest and open prairie areas. The trail is an all-paved surface. The race begins at Freedom Field, located behind The Grove Church, 8585 Rice Lake Road, at 8 a. m. Saturday, July 19. Check-in begins at 6:30 a. m.
Online-only advance registration is available at mgco. org. The fee is $ 15 for advanced registration and $ 20 for day-of registrations. The deadline is July 17. Space is limited to the first 350 registered runners and usually fills before the deadline.
Strollers and dogs are not permitted on the course. All participants will receive a T-shirt and postrace refreshments. While this is a fun run, it is timed and medals will be awarded for age and gender categories. Shoe chips are worn to ensure quick and accurate timing results. Race clock timing is supported by Wayzata Results, Inc.
Honoring the memory of Jim Deane
Jim Deane was a pillar for the Osseo-Maple Grove community. He died in 2015. He served on the Maple Grove City Council, was elected mayor, was a member of the Maple Grove Park Board and a chairperson for the Three Rivers Park District.
Deane worked his entire career as a teacher and coach at Osseo High School. He made an impact on the lives of many, including students and his fellow teachers and coaches.

It was the decision of Mike Anderson, chair of the Rice Lake Classic Run in 2016, to rename this annual event in honor of Deane. Deane, a runner himself, was on hand every year to organize the runners, blast the starting gun, cheer on the participants and hand out awards.

Kids Run
For the younger runners, boys and girls ages 5-12 are invited to join the Kids Fun Run at Central Park, at 9:30 a. m. Saturday, July 19. This 0.8-mile run / walk is the perfect race to introduce the enjoyment and rewarding accomplishment of running.
Enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and outdoor exercise. The starting line is on the path near the lake, north of the interactive fountain.
