States Manufacturing expands business, community presence

A company founded in Minnesota over 100 years ago, recently expanded adding a second manufacturing facility in Dayton.
States Manufacturing was founded in 1922 by Anthony Shallbetter. According to Jesse Barthel, EVP Operations with States Manufacturing, the company is still partially owned and operated by Wyatt Shallbetter, a fourth generation member of the Shallbetter family.
It recently merged with three other companies in the industry to form a new company named Forgent. Wyatt Shallbetter is also the chief technology officer in the newly formed company- Forgent.
“ The business has moved around a little bit, but it’ s always been located within the greater Minneapolis area,” Barthel said.
Currently, the company is operating out of two facilities, one in Champlin near Highway 169 and Elm Creek Parkway and the other in the recently opened Dayton building off of County Road 81 and Dayton Parkway.
Barthel said that both locations do similar work, but create different products. The Champlin facility, about 140,000 square feet, focuses on the company’ s low-voltage products. The 500,000-square-foot facility in Dayton works on medium-voltage products and E-houses.
“ An E-house is a large steel structure that we provide with our electrical switch gear and other products already installed in it,” he added.“ It’ s quite large. It’ s 16 feet wide by 56 feet long. We completely construct those, manufacture those and assemble those, in our plant and then ship them out.”
The products that States Manufacturing are primarily for electrical distribution and electrical switch gear for commercial or industrial sites, according to Barthel. A switch gear is like a“ really big light switch” where power can be turned off or disconnected to a large facility.
“ You would see our product used in a large manufacturing facility like ours,” he said.“ The electrical distribution panels in our plant, we made for ourselves.”
Barthel said their product is made locally. States purchases the sheets of metal and bars of copper it uses to make its products.“ We shape it, we punch it, we cut it, we paint it, we form it, and weld it and create the finished product all on site,” he added.
States Manufacturing’ s reach provides
The reach of States Manufacturing expands beyond the Champlin and Dayton area.
Barthel said they work with large businesses across the state, the country and even with some international businesses.
“ We work business to business,” he said.“ We’ ve worked with really big plants, municipalities, government installations, products to the government, universities, hospitals, casinos. Think about anything with really large infrastructure where they’ re having electricity and a large power connection to the grid and they need to control that and distribute that power amongst their installation.”
He said what sets States apart is that it provides its customers with engineered-to-order solutions.“ Our customers have specific needs and we can design and make that solution for them,” he added.“ A lot of other companies provide a standard product, we really offer a
