Port of Chelan Cashmere The Port of Chelan County acquired the derelict Cashmere mill site in 2008. After years of work, remediation and investment, the site is now home to a thriving modern industrial park. Several tenants have already made a home in the port’s buildings, including Hurst International, maker of machines to produce labels for fruit. Port of Chelan Business Development Director Craig Larsen on the floor of one of the port’s two new business park buildings. Production Manager Alfredo Cruces started working at Hurst International in shipping and receiving in 1986, and has worked with the printing field called flexographics all his life. Based in California, he is in Washington to train locals on use of this and other machines that can print 10 to 12 million fruit labels a day. “It’s a good machine,” Cruces said. “Very well made.” Cory Murdock, area regional manager for Hurst International, points to the labels that his company’s machines can create, with unique scannable codes that allow any consumer with a smart phone to track the date and place the fruit was harvested.
