252 Houdini Help 3.8.22 Copy endgame databases to hard disk F ile M e nu Opt ions T a ble ba se s Accessing the endgame databases (Nalimov tablebases) from a hard disk is much faster than from the CD. It is advisable to install them onto your hard disk, if you have enough space. Create a directory (e.g., e:\cbdata\tbs) on your hard disk and copy the content of the directory \TBS from the program CD into the new directory. Then set the path in the "Options" dialog box: Note that you can put the tablebase files into different directories, partitions or even different hard disks on your computer. Use the "Browse" button to locate the directories. The c a c he m e m ory is used to speed up access to the tablebases during a game. A value between one and eight MB is advisable. 3.8.23 Benchmark Engine Che ss Be nc hm a rk The speed of the hardware that the engine is running on, has great influence on its playing strength. Obviously, a 3 GHz Pentium is going to give you a much better performance than one running at 1.7 GHz. But the optimum configuration of the hardware also plays an important role. For instance, the amount of first and second level cache, the speed of access to memory, and other such factors, can lead to considerable variance. Two computers with exactly the same processor may produce quite different results. © ChessBase 2012
