New storage system
CPT 4 is based on a completely new storage system which is scalable and aimed at users who want to create
really big repertoires. Beside compatibility issues with Windows Vista and Windows 7 the old storage system
got the most complaints. Now, both things are fixed!
Improved Repertoire concept
CPT introduced the concept of sub-repertoires as the first chess software to the market. It let you easily manage
all your openings within one repertoire which have been usually independent databases for other chess programs (e.g. you could only open one at a time). CPT 4 is taking this to a new level.
Although it didn’t look like, but in CPT 3.3 sub-repertoires were still pretty independent except that they are
shown in the same repertoire which made life already easier. That means that positions were stored separately
for each sub-repertoire. There was nothing like cross-opening transposition detection. Furthermore, if you had a
complex opening repertoire it could be difficult to keep an overview of all sub-repertoires. At the same time
some deep openings let you wish to create sub-repertoire just for certain sub-systems / variations, but they
would have no hierarchical relation to their original sub-repertoire.
All this changed with CPT 4. The repertoire is now represented in an explorer style and new elements are introduced to provide a better way to organize complex openings. These new elements are folders, variations and
sub-variations. The root element is always a repertoire item followed by a black and white folder under which
all openings (or folders) are arranged.
Now, all positions are only stored once even if they are part of opening A and opening B. This is also true for
multiple repertoires within the same database. You can even see for a give position whether any other opening
contains a move which you don’t cover for the current one.
New Position Explorer
This is a very powerful new way to navigate through your opening. It is a mix of a list and tree view and let you
browse your opening. A smart tooltip which shows the arising position helps to quickly get an overview of deep
variations without even having to navigate to it.
