UPGRADING TO A NEW CHESS KING VERSION
Chess King is constantly evolving, and new versions of the program are periodically released. If you choose to purchase a new Chess King version, you ' ll need to know where to copy your existing data so that you can use it in the new program.
This chapter assumes that you know how to copy files using Windows. If you don ' t, you can find that information in your Windows Help files, as well as online, and in many Windows tutorial books.
When you install a new version of Chess King, the installation program creates a new folder for the software which is separate from the old Chess King program. So you ' ll need to move your player profiles, databases, and trees from one Chess King version to the other.
We ' re going to use a bit of shorthand in which“[ Drive:]” indicates the letter of the drive to which you ' ve installed Chess King, and“[ Chess King X ]” refers to the Chess King folder.( Typically the folder is named“ Chess King” followed by the version number or name; for example,“ Chess King 2”,“ Chess King 4”,“ Chess King Gold”, etc.)
Player profiles for Chess King are found in the folder [ Drive:]\[ Chess King X ]\ Data \ Config \ Profiles. When you open that folder, you ' ll find two files for each player who has set up a profile in Chess King, which end in the extensions. bak and. xml( for example, Chuck ' s files would appear as“ Chuck. bak” and“ Chuck. xml”). You ' ll need to copy both files to the \ Data \ Config \ Profiles folder of your new Chess King program. After you ' ve copied both files for each player, you ' ll see them as available profiles the next time you launch your new version of Chess King.
[ Note that the structure / location of the files and folders within the main Chess King folder don ' t change from version to version, which makes it easy for you to know where to copy a file so that it will appear in your new Chess King version. Also please note that you don ' t want to have either the old or new version of Chess King running when you copy the files, as you may get an error message from Windows when you try to copy them.]
