PART 2 • Setting up a classical game
You'll notice that if you select a value from 700 to 1900 your
opponent will not be Houdini. The Houdini 4 program is the
strongest chess engine available for home computer use; it's
so strong that it can't be “tweaked down” to play at Elo levels
lower than about 1950. So at these (relatively) lower levels,
you'll be playing against another (weaker) chess engine which
has been included for these playing purposes. (Note that the
analysis functions [which we'll learn about in a later chapter]
always use the Houdini 4 engine.) At the 700 through 1900
level, you'll notice that the engine is called “Robot” followed by
the Elo rating you've selected:
At higher levels, you'll see that Houdini is your opponent
(and the rating approximation will still appear as part of the
engine's name):
• Finally, the two buttons at the top let you play either White or Black.
Unlike many other play modes in Chess King, there's no large green
“Go” button below the board – clicking the “Start now” buttons will
begin your game immediately.
