WHEN A QUEST ENDS, ANOTHER BEGINS!
When you finish a chess quest and receive your reward,
Chess King will automatically load the opening position for
the next quest. You don't have to undertake it right away;
remember, the quest doesn't actually begin until you click the
green “Go” button.
Chess King's chess quests are grouped together according
to their approximate difficulty. The first two quests are pretty
easy, but each successive quest level gets a wee bit tougher
than the last. If you check the description panel when you
roll the mouse over a quest in the list, you'll notice that
multiplying the quest's Level number by one hundred gives
you the approximate Elo rating of your computer opponent.
We learned earlier that Houdini will always play against you
at full strength; the Elo rating value is based on the material
advantage you enjoy, not some artificial internal “handicap”
imposed on Houdini by the program.
The challenges become greater as you go, because the
advantages you enjoy become slimmer. In Level Ten's initial
quest, for instance, you have a two Knight advantage:
