STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE THROUGH STORYTELLING

Students at Mary Lillard Intermediate School stepped out of their classrooms to learn more about Native American Heritage Month . Students gathered together in tipis set up outside their campus building and learned about Native American culture from the Tipi Tellers storytelling group . The professional storytellers performed folktales , explained tipi architecture and played music on a Native American flute for students .

The storytelling group covered both social studies and English / Language Arts concepts during their presentations .
“ Student loved it and were really engaged ,” fifth-grade social studies teacher Sarah Hannum said about the presentations . “ The Tipi Tellers were able to answer some questions that correlate to some of the common misconceptions we hear from students when we begin studying westward expansion .”

Hannum said the stories students heard will help them make connections from the past to the present .
“ This will make our students life ready because they will have been exposed with different cultures throughout their time here in Mansfield ISD ,” said Hannum .

GOLD DUSTERS , SILVER SPURS TO PERFORM AT RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL

Dusters and Legacy High School Silver Spurs drill teams will spread holiday cheer this season in New York City . The teams will perform together as an opening act for the Radio City Rockettes on Dec . 8 at Radio City Music Hall .
“ This experience is opening up their eyes to the many opportunities out there ,” said Alex Thomas , MHS drill team director . “ What ’ s most important on this trip is seeing what else is out there for these students .”
The Mansfield High School Gold Dusters and Legacy High School Silver Spurs drill teams will spread holiday cheer this season in New York City . The teams will perform together as an opening act for the Radio City Rockettes on Dec . 8 at Radio City Music Hall .
The teams are learning a new routine for the New York show , and a former Rockette , Summyr Whaley , choreographed and taught the routine to the performers .
“ As a dancer you grow up and you idolize the Radio City Rockettes and the performance hall itself ,” Thomas said . “ The opportunity to dance on that stage is once in a lifetime .”
The teams will debut their routine at the annual Hometown Holidays Dance Spectacular on Dec . 2 at the Dr . Jim Vaszauskas Center for the Performing Arts , 1110 W . Debbie Ln ., Mansfield , TX 76063 .
“ The students are super excited ,” Thomas said . “ We ’ re ready to sprinkle a little Texas drill team in New York City .”
