6TH-GRADER WINS MISD SPELLING BEE
It took 19 rounds and spelling words sometimes even the grownups had difficulty pronouncing , before sixth grader Robert Fisher was named Mansfield ISD ’ s 2023 district spelling bee champion . His winning word ? Exaggerate .
“ I felt really happy and excited when I heard it , because I knew the word . I knew how it was spelled , and it was the last word before I could win the whole thing ,” Robert said .

Robert ’ s dad Kirby said in those last couple of rounds , the tension was high . Words like vespertine , phalanges and regurgitate quickly whittled down the field to just two students .
This year ’ s runner up , Naveed Ur Ahmed , an eighth grader from Worley Middle School went out on the word krypton . Robert just needed to spell exaggerate correctly to move onto the regional competition in Fort Worth . When he uttered the last letter and was declared the winner , Robert ’ s dad beamed in the audience .
Mansfield ISD ’ s district spelling bee is an annual tradition sponsored by the Mansfield Sunrise Rotary . The words used in the contest are provided by Scripps National Spelling Bee .
Nikki Walls , MISD English Language Arts and Reading coordinator , organized the spelling bee program which begins with classroom contests at the beginning of the year followed by campus competitions that lead to the district bee held in February .
“ This spelling bee encompasses all of Vision 2030 because it engages our learners to want to know more about literacy ,” Walls said .
This was Robert ’ s third year competing in the district spelling bee . Now , his sights are set on the regional competition at Texas Christian University in March . The winner will represent the region in May at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington , D . C . with an opportunity to take home a grand prize of $ 50,000 .
