HIGH SCHOOL ARTISTS BRING ELEMENTARY STUDENTS’ DRAWINGS TO LIFE
There’ s nothing cuter than an elementary student’ s artwork— unless you have a high school student take all that imagination and turn it into a stuffed animal.
For the last two years, students at Charlotte Anderson Preparatory Academy have been dreaming up and drawing characters for Summit High School students to sew into three-dimensional stuffed animals.
The elementary and high school students met for the first time in early May. Junior Daniel Ogiozee was relieved the student whose drawing he received thought he did a good job.
“ It’ s a fun experience to meet the person who made the drawing,” Ogiozee said.“ I feel like the drawing matched her personality; she just seems like a fun person.”
The high school students spent about two weeks in their art classes sewing the felt creations.
“ It was really fun. I’ ve never actually sewn before, so it was something new. I really enjoyed it because I got to see a drawing come to life,” said sophomore Kendra Estrada.
The Arlington Police Department attended the meet-up to accept the finished products for their Victims Services Unit. The team responds to crisis situations to counsel families, and oftentimes, provides stuffed animals for the children involved.
“ I think it’ s good for the kids who need help because they’ re going through some stuff, and they may need something to help them get through it,” said fourth grader, Jeselle Duncan.
A grant from the Mansfield ISD Education Foundation allowed art teachers to purchase felt, thread, and the other materials for the project.
