MOM THANKS SCHOOL FOR SUPPORT DURING SON’ S HEALTH STRUGGLES
Nine-year-old Joey Williams got the surprise of his life during his school’ s awards ceremony on the last week of school. When his second-grade class at Glenn Harmon Elementary School was finished collecting their award certificates, Joey’ s mom came to the microphone and announced that he and his family will be taking a trip to Disney World, thanks to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
In his nine years, Joey has undergone six open-heart surgeries, including a heart transplant in 2023 to cure his lifelong health issues related to a congenital heart defect. Joey was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and underwent his first surgery when he was just three days old.
“ The school rallied around us and supported us. They really made sure that we were okay and that we had what we needed,” Boyle said.
In addition to the tour of Disney, the family’ s trip will also include visits to Universal Studios and Sea World. When asked whom he looks forward to seeing the most, Joey said Mickey’ s dog and Darth Vader.
His mom, LaKesha Boyle, described how Joey struggled to gain weight and required a feeding tube. Until he received the new heart, Joey suffered from low oxygen levels and fatigue. Since the heart transplant a year and a half ago, Joey has gained 20 pounds, and his energy levels have increased exponentially. He’ s doing so well that his doctors gave him the go-ahead to travel.
“ He’ s finally healthy and strong enough for his wish to be granted,” Boyle said.“ It truly is a blessing.”
When his mom announced the surprise, Joey’ s classmates tooted their party horns in celebration. Boyle wanted to share the news with the staff and students at Glenn Harmon to thank them for everything they’ ve done during Joey’ s journey to better health.
