TIMBERVIEW HITS A HIGH NOTE AT THE MAVS GAME
The spring semester at Timberview High School began with an unforgettable milestone as the choir performed the national anthem in front of 20,000 fans at a Dallas Mavericks game. The crowd was ready to cheer as the Mavericks faced off against the Timberwolves, and the Timberview Choir had a prime opportunity to kick off the night.
For Olivia Nguyen, a senior at Timberview, it was an experience she never imagined.
“ If you had told me back in middle school that I’ d be doing things like this in high school— singing at a Mavericks game— I wouldn’ t have believed you,” Nguyen said with a smile.
Under the direction of choir director Jason Forte, the group rehearsed for months, preparing to perform in front of a much larger audience than their usual district events. Typically, they sang at hometown games and other school-sponsored functions, but nothing compared to the energy of American Airlines Center— or the chance to stand so close to NBA players.
“ We’ re just really excited to sing,” Nguyen said.“ And to be that close to a professional NBA team.”
The choir performed at center court with Mavericks players behind them and Timberwolves players in front. Under the arena’ s bright lights, the pressure was on, but for a minute and a half, the Timberview Choir held the attention of the entire crowd— the fans, the coaches and even the players.
For Nguyen, it was a moment she’ ll never forget. Being part of the Timberview Choir, she said, has been life changing in more ways than one.
“ Being in choir has really helped me grow as a person,” she said.“ It helped me achieve things I didn’ t believe I could.”
