STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN STATE MEDALS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Mansfield ISD student-athletes have proven they are the top in their sport by taking home hardware from state competitions . In addition , the talent of nearly 100 seniors has caught the eye of coaches at the collegiate level , earning them scholarships to continue playing their sport .

SWIMMING AND DIVING
Two MISD student-athletes medaled at the 2021 University Interscholastic League ( UIL ) Swimming and Diving State Meet .
Summit High School ’ s Ben Nguyen earned the gold medal in the 5A boys 1-meter dive event . Shawn Mohseni , from Lake Ridge High School , earned a silver medal in the 6A boys 100- yard backstroke . The medalists are both juniors in high school .
UIL ’ s boys state meet was held Feb . 26-27 at Bill Walker Pool and Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio .
Four student-athletes placed in the top three of their event at the UIL Track and Field State Meet in Austin .
Christine Mallard , a junior at Legacy High School , received a silver medal for her performance in the 200-meter run .

Sophomore Nathan Bresee , from Mansfield High School , earned a bronze medal in 100-meter wheelchair , 400-meter wheelchair and shot put .
Summit High School ’ s Jackson Cichon finished his high school career with a bronze medal in the 800-meter run .
Antonio Munoz , from Timberview High School , also finished his senior year with a bronze medal in long jump .
The track and field state competition took place May 6-8 .
NATIONAL SIGNING DAY
More than 90 student-athletes are celebrating the decision to continue playing at the collegiate level with a scholarship offer .
National Signing Day is held on the first Wednesday in February . It has traditionally been the first day that a high school senior can sign a binding letter of intent to play at a school that is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA ).
Student-athletes from Lake Ridge High School , Legacy High School , Mansfield High School , Summit High School and Timberview High School were part of their school ’ s National Signing Day ceremony on Feb . 5 .
“ Our student-athletes are students first . They work very hard in the classroom , and they work equally as hard in their sport ,” said Philip O ’ Neal , executive director of athletics . “ Our mission in the athletics department is to build leaders with integrity and confidence through competition , and I ’ m extremely proud of all of our student-athletes .”
Other early signing days were held in November , December and April .
