JROTC Team Named Grand Champion, Advance to Nationals
T
he Mansfield High School Junior Reserve Officer
Training Corps (JROTC) earned a spot to compete at one
of the largest army-only talent contests in the nation.
The young musicians were recognized at
the Feb. 27 school board meeting.
MISD Students Chosen as All-State Musicians
E
ighteen Mansfield ISD Fine Arts students have proven they are among the top high school musicians in Texas. Ten
choir students and eight band students were named All-State musicians by the Texas Music Educators Association
(TMEA).
According to TMEA, it is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. Out of 68,000 students who
auditioned, approximately 1,700 students were selected to perform in one of 15 ensembles at the annual TMEA
Conference in San Antonio.
At the annual 5 th Brigade JROTC Drill Team Championships
held in San Antonio, the Mansfield High team was named
the Grand Champion, which is the highest honor given.
Trophies were also earned for other categories such as
inspection, regulation and exhibition.
The cadets will now advance to the 2018 U.S. Army Cadet
Command JROTC National Drill Championships. The
national competition will be held in Louisville, Kentucky on April 14. Winners of the Army Nationals have the chance to
go on to compete in the Grand Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida in May.
The Mansfield High School JROTC team is coached by Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Kinnel. Lt. Col. Patrick Easley is the senior
army instructor in charge of the Mansfield High program.

The Mansfield High School men’s choir was also selected to perform at the
annual conference after judges reviewed a submitted recording. The group
was one of the only high school men’s choirs to perform.
