DECA Students Qualify for State
After District Win
T
hirty-one Ben Barber Innovation Academy students earned the opportunity
to advance to the state level after top finishes at the District 7 Distributive
Education Clubs of America (DECA) competition.
DECA is an organization, founded in 1946, dedicated to preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in
marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges worldwide. The high school division
includes 200,000 members in 3,500 schools.
The students competed against the best business and marketing students in Texas at the 2017 State Career
Development Conference on Feb. 23-25 in San Antonio.
Winners of the state competition will then prepare for the international level event in Anaheim, California on April
26-29. An estimated 18,000 high school students, advisors, businesspersons and alumni will gather at the event to
develop knowledge and skills for college and career.
Legacy High School JROTC Earns Best in Brigade
L
egacy High School’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) will be competing on the national level at
one of the largest army-only talent contests.
The Iron Broncos Armed Drill Team earned 5 th Brigade Grand Champion, the highest honor given, during the annual
5 th Brigade JROTC Drill Championships held in San Antonio. The team beat 21 schools from a five-state region to
earn the title.
The win advanced the cadets to the Army National Drill Championship, which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky
on April 1. The Iron Broncos won ninth and fifth place at the national event in 2016 and 2015, respectively. The team
hopes to win the Army Nationals this year and compete in the all-service nationals, or Grand Nationals, at Daytona
Beach, Florida on May 5.
JROTC is a program offered to high schools that teaches students character, student achievement, wellness,
leadership and diversity.
