MISD Academic Decathlon Students Win Medals at State
tudents from Summit, Legacy, and Lake Ridge high schools
competed in the state Academic Decathlon (AcDec)
competition and ranked at the top of their categories.
AcDec is a ten-event scholastic competition in which students
compete in seven multiple-choice exams, an essay, an interview,
and a speech.
Summit High School placed 10th in the state of Texas amongst
5A schools. The team earned a bronze medal in the super quiz
relay and took home seven individual medals. Daniel Erickson,
Ariba Naqvi, Brijin Hartrick, and Caleb Venerable earned gold
medals in their categories. Samone Card, Zach Beaman, and
Olivia Marx received bronze medals in their categories.
The Summit AcDec team has also won the regional
championship competition for six straight years.
Legacy High School’s Deja Morehead won a gold medal at the state competition after obtaining a perfect
score in the interview event.
Lake Ridge High School’s David Serrano received a silver medal in economics, making it the first state
medal for Lake Ridge in the Academic Decathlon.

MISD Debate Students Advance to Two State Competitions
T
wo Legacy High School students have earned a spot to
compete in two very competitive debate events on the
state level.
Ben Speigner and Breton Hawkins qualified for the UIL
State Cross-Examination (CX) Debate Championship. The
junior and senior have also qualified for the Texas Forensic
Association (TFA) State Tournament.

several awards for debate throughout the year.
The TFA State Tournament is one of the largest of its kind
in the nation. Speigner and Hawkins’ winning records in
TFA events throughout the year qualified them for the state
tournament. Qualifiers are eligible for college scholarships.
Legacy debate coach Howard Ritz said the Legacy High debate
team has earned several trophies from debate events this year. The team is the largest in MISD with more
than 65 students enrolled in the course.
