worked for UPS and was promoted to an air ramp
frontline loading supervisor.
Dr. Michael Evans has served on the MISD School
Board since 2007.
What schools did you attend?
I attended James Madison Senior High in Houston,
Texas; The University of Texas at Arlington; Texas
Christian University (Brite Divinity School);
Southern Methodist University (Perkins Theological
Seminary); Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary; and Baylor University (Truett Theological
Seminary).
What would be a perfect afternoon for you?
My perfect afternoon would be sitting on a porch
in a rocking chair looking out on the lake feeling a
spring breeze upon my face.
I accepted my call into ministry during that time
in 1988 and began serving as the youth minister
at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Mansfield,
Texas. I became the senior pastor in 1991. I was
commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy as a
Reserve Chaplain, but also served as an educator
as a long-term substitute teacher in Fort Worth
ISD, part-time counselor for Tarrant County Junior
College (TCC), full-time college-bound counselor,
and a coordinator for G.E.D. and E.S.L. programs.
I later began full-time service with the Baptist
General Convention of Texas as the Director of
African-American Ministries, serving over 650
churches statewide from 2001-2006. I have served
on missions in Nigeria, Spain, Japan, Sierra Leone,
and South Africa.
What makes you so passionate about MISD?
I know that education gives every child a fighting
chance of becoming an asset to society. Education
is the great equalizer, and it is a person’s ticket out
of poverty and social depravity. I want to be that
person who contributes to the success of the coming
generations. Those children hold the future of our
planet in their hands.
Who was your role model as a kid?
My role model is my grandfather, Albert Evans. He
was a faithful church-going man who walked the
walk. He was married to my grandmother for 56
years and worshipped the ground she walked on. He
worked at one job for 54 years, raised six boys, and
fed every kid in the neighborhood who was hungry.
He also loved each of his grandchildren and made
all of us feel as if we were the most special people in
the world.
Give us a brief bio of your career.
After graduating from high school, I moved to
Fort Worth and became a student at UT-Arlington
and studied Political Science - Pre-Law. In the
summer of 1985, I became a teacher’s aide serving
“emotionally disturbed children”. The next year, I
